Autumn Crocus

$400.00

8 x 10 watercolor painting done on Arches paper, professionally mounted on a cradled wood panel — original artwork is UV varnished and waxed to seal and comes in a floating frame.

Part of the Tea Time series, this piece features a steaming cup of tea and a few blooms of deadly nightshade.

The autumn crocus is a source of colchicine, a toxic alkaloid present in every part of the plant. Colchicine poisoning initially causes gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. A second, more dangerous stage typically begins a few hours after ingestion and progresses to multi-organ failure. During this phase the patient may develop respiratory distress along with kidney and liver failure. Death is most likely at this stage, usually resulting from a fatal cardiac arrhythmia or cardiac arrest.
